Solving the EVIL java SSL issue
Submitted by vishal on Mon, 12/17/2007 - 19:05. Same 'ol | Website | Work At-SiteTesting web applications in developmental environments that attempt to utilize Https through unsigned certificates can be challenging, especially if you’ve never had the pleasure of working with Sun’s keytool utility and X.509 security certificates.
This issue manifests itself as javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeExceptions and sun.security.validator.ValidatorExceptions. For example, attempting to access untrusted Https through Java may yield stack traces with these tidbits:
Javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException:
sun.security.validator.ValidatorException:
PKIX path building failed:
sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException:

1. Webaroo
Webaroo indexes the “highest quality” websites for content and creates topic based web packs for download. The content in those webpacks is stored offline on your computer and updated periodically. To test it, I fired up my old PC, installed the 5 MB application, and downloaded the World News and San Francisco web packs. Then I unplugged from the net and tried it out. The webpacks were great, allowing me to search or browse content. I would love this on a plane. The specific website index didn’t work out so well - all formatting and CSS was stripped from the page and the site looked horrible. Still, the content was there.

The company has raised $6M in a second-round funding led by return backer Northwest Venture Associates. Vigilos’ software platform is designed for government and businesses with one or more locations at which intrusion, access control, bar code, point-of-sale, video, audio and other physical security, transaction, and operational data is generated.
It seems like a smart idea. Security systems are generally from a previous generation. Vigilos is just bringing modern software and networking techniques. Founder and CEO Geof Barker co-founded The Cobalt Group, which did to the automotive industry what Vigilos wants to do to physical security. As co-CEO, Barker led Cobalt through a successful IPO. However, it does seem that Vigilos is having a bit of a slow start. It can be that way selling new apps into a space that isn’t accustomed to new apps.

1. giftTagging.com
-Gifttagging.com, created by Jeremy Baines and his team, is a combination of Amazon Wish List and del.icio.us. Bookmark products using either their bookmarklet or firefox extension, tag them and place them either in your “gift list” or your “I have list”. Bonus feature: you can import your Amazon Wish List and start with that. Many of the features are similar to Kaboodle, although this is a highly specialized site focused just on gifts. I like it.
2. myPickList.com
Jeff Eichel’s MyPickList is better understood in terms of Yahoo Shoposphere - It’s a service to help people make money by recommending products they like to others. I’ve posted screen shots of how the service will look here.

1. Evoca -- www.evoca.com
Evoca will change the way we communicate by empowering voices in ways never imagined before. We envision people everywhere speaking their minds, sharing their ideas, and storing their memories on Evoca. We see voice becoming the next tool for publishing and communicating online and through your telephone.
Evoca is clearly an ambitious project. The main issue is whether or not they can get and stay ahead of Odeo and become the brand people think of when they want to record and share audio files onlineSince others can comment on each file as well, Evoca has basically created a podcasting blog for each user. Add editing tools as I mention above, and they have a very nice platform

Switzerland based Sky-Click is a an interesting idea released by Ads-Click that already launched a white label adwords/adsense-like plateform (used by Wanadoo ISP in Europe) as well as a pay-per-call ad format. Sky-Click is a 100% web-based solution to set up your call center, built on Skype API and very easy to implement and use. The service does not require any particular hardware investment and can be easily integrated in a web site (e-commerce for example). All you have to do is downloading Skype client on the call-center collaborators’ computer. On the end-user side all you have to do is press the “call” button that will initiate a call (or a video call) to the call-center.

RapidMind provides a software development platform that allows developers to take advantage of a new generation of high performance processors. These new processors, including the GPU, IBM Cell, and other multi-core processors can offer applications an order of magnitude increase in performance. Based in Waterloo, Canada, RapidMind is a venture-backed private company that is built on over 5 years of advanced research and development.
While new processors offer much faster computational capabilities, their architecture poses challenges for application developers, said Monteyne. RapidMind's software is designed to make development simpler for programmers by allowing them to use standard C++ programming to create high-performance applications. Its technology is aimed at sectors including video game development, image processing, content generation and scientific computation.

1. Trabber.com
Low-Down:
They’ve built a cool, simple website that is a real-time search engine for flights. Very clean and easy to use, it delivers good results. Their space is very competitive in the US, but I haven’t really seen the American players localizing for European audiences. And there don’t seem to be many European startups in this area (I think Mobissimo was originally French, but as soon as they were funded they headed stateside) So there’s a real opportunity for Trabber to take on the Mobissimo/Kayak/SideStep role in Europe.
